Steps to Wrest Back Control Over Your Life

Control is a strong word with a negative connotation. However, having the right amount of control over one’s life can take you from feeling untethered and aimless to feeling secure and purposeful.

Taking control of your life does not mean that it will all be smooth sailing and you won’t have to deal with any unexpected problems. It only means you will not be thrown off guard by every curveball life throws your way.

It means that you will be confident enough to weather any storm, be it your daily routine hiccups or any major difficulties that may arise.

Here are a few steps you can take to wrest back some control over your life that you might have lost over the years.

Illness and Recovery

Good health is a blessing that some of us get deprived of. An accident may leave you bed-riddled and unable to lead an independent life. At other times, people are just born with lifelong conditions.

Chronic conditions are immensely difficult to live with. They not only leave the affected person feeling helpless but also their family.

In situations where the condition could have been avoidable, the first step is to find the person responsible for your or your loved one’s condition and hold them responsible.

If a drunk driver causes an accident that cripples you for life, the court will have to hold the drunk driver responsible, right?

Similarly, if a health organization or a doctor exercised negligence in providing care, you should do the same, so they shouldn’t be allowed to cause more harm. Or, you could sue them for compensation for your condition.

Cases of negligence are common in child deliveries. If your doctor was negligent and compromised your child’s care, file an erb’s palsy lawsuit to receive compensation to fund your child’s treatment. Getting some sort of justice against the person responsible for your circumstances is the first step toward taking back control after a life-altering event.

Set goals

Our set routines cloud the bigger picture from us. So much of our time is spent fulfilling our duties, at work, and running chores, that we end up forgetting why we are doing any of it in the first place.

Sometimes it can help to take a step back from your busy routine and reconnect with your goals. What is it that you want to achieve? How do you plan to live your life? These are important questions that you need to ponder every now and then.

The answers can be simple, like wanting to be happy and independent, or tangible objectives, like becoming a millionaire.

If you envision what you want to achieve, it makes it easier to strive toward those goals. You can imagine your ideal life in your mind, or create a vision board on Pinterest. Visualizing your life goals will give you the direction you need to work towards achieving them.

Avoid distractions

Constant exposure to multiple stimuli can leave your mind exhausted. This exhaustion keeps you from giving your 100 percent at work and, ultimately, prevents you from achieving your goals. It can also leave you drained and lost at the same time.

With all that, it is no wonder that you start feeling out of control. To limit your sensory stimulation, stay away from your phone when working.

Resist the urge to check your email every few minutes or so. Avoid playing loud music or leaving the television on in the background.

Make sure you expand these distraction-eliminating tips beyond your work. Take a walk outside to relax after a long day at work without listening to music on your headphones.

Unwind in a screen-free space while you do a relaxing activity, like reading or cooking. Also, try to avoid looking at a screen right before you turn in to sleep.

Learn to live in the present

The present is a gift. Stressing over the past or worrying about the future never got anyone anywhere. As long as you live, there will always be things that need to be done and problems that need solving.

Dwelling on them too much will leave you drained to be able to deal with the troubles that are in front of you. To combat the feeling of having no control over your condition, focus on each day as it comes.

Make a planner and prioritize your daily tasks. Establish a daily routine, so that you can accomplish all your tasks while also making time for social activities and rest.

Conclusion

It is easy to get swept up in the current of your hectic daily routine. Major setbacks in life can detract you from your path to achieving your life goals. Wresting back control of your life is no mean feat, but it is possible. By having the right attitude, living in the present, avoiding distractions, and envisioning your goals, you can redirect yourself toward the path to success.
